A leading scholar examines the radicals who hijacked the GOP — and wrecked the longest conservative ascendancy in American history The failure of the administration of George W. In the aftermath of the terrorist attacks of September 11th, Bush enjoyed the greatest popularity ever recorded for a modern American president. Republicans on Capitol Hill, under the iron rule of House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, fattened their coffers through a fearsome operation overseen by corporate lobbyists and GOP...

thumbnail: New Ssion Video -

A slab of Ssion is always a great way to the end the day, so let's get into it. Ssion man Cody Critcheloe remains busy: He took a director's credit on Tilly & The Wall's Beat Control," gave his mom a punk makeover in "Ah-Ma," and later hit us with the trashy radness of "Day Job." And yet none of that prepared me for Cody's latest directorial effort, this time for Fools Gold track "A Wolves Eye," which he describes as "David Lynch-meets-Jean Paul Gaultier with a little big of Gregg Araki and the scent of Jean Paul Gaultier (that's the cologne I wear)." Incredibly, after watching it that all makes sense! The video is set to a version of the song that's slowed, compliments of J.A.M., which makes for icy synths and dark beats that fit the fireside ritualism and druid sleaze sorta perfectly. I wouldn't say this is NSFW, but we posted it late because, maybe you'll just get less questions if you watch it from home.

If it was up to us we'd play all the new songs because they're so fun to play." So you might wanna stop. Or, keep on doing it, depending on which side of this scrum you are.

New TV On The Radio -

Your Tuesday afternoon just got 100% more great. "Golden Age" is the first listen from TV On The Radio's forthcoming return from Cookie Mountain, titled Dear Science, (comma included, thinking its epistolary). It will probably make you dance. Don't be fooled by the dry tones on the "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough" bass groovy intro, things do open up -- not quite in the same way they perfected last time out, it's a slightly modified mix coming from Sitek: horns and strings, synths and handclaps, polyrhythm in the pulse, vocals melting all over the horizon. Tunde (Oops, it's Kyp) is pitching "a golden age, coming around." (I definitely hear Celebration's Katrina Ford in there, too.) Pretty triumphant, guys. Have a listen at tvontheradio.com. Yes, that is Kyp shirtless and afroless.

There's been a few developments in the world of YACHT since last we checked in. For one: YACHT is now a full-time duo, with the addition of one Claire L. Evans (to see the pair in action, watch them answer our lame Texas Trivia questions). For another: A few months ago YACHT recorded "Summer Song," an aural love letter to tourmates LCD Soundsystem. James Murphy was so touched by the track's appropriation of the DFA-banger vibe, his label decided not only to put out the single as part of a four-track EP, but to sign team YACHT for their next album release. That is one powerful song, and so here it gets powerful visual accompaniment. It is filmed by Portland director Judah Switzer, and it captures the making of the worst music video ever. But in a good way.

Popular "mixtape" sharing site, Muxtape, has been temporarily shut down due to some conflict with music industry trade organization, the RIAA. The website now displays this message:

Muxtape will be unavailable for a brief period while we sort out a problem with the RIAA.

The popular site allowed users to make and share mixtapes of MP3s - using their own music - and included fans in many bands and record labels. The trade organization spoke to Rolling Stone about the problems with muxtape:

For the past several months, we have communicated our legal concerns with the site and repeatedly tried to work with them to have illegal content taken down. Muxtape was hosting copies of copyrighted sound recordings without authorization from the copyright owners. Making these recordings available for streaming playback also requires authorization from the copyright owners. Muxtape has not obtained authorization from our member companies to host or stream copies of their sound recordings.

According to the article, for the site to obtain the rights to stream the music, it would need to set up a licensing arrangement with record labels. Rolling Stone also spoke to some legal experts about the issue, Fred Von Lohmann, Electronic Frontier Foundation's senior intellectual property attorney noted:

I think they have a strong legal defense. The problem is if they might not have that money to go to court and take on the RIAA. But it's a measure of success to be sued by the RIAA. Once you're popular enough, that's when they come calling.

Mae has announced their departure from major label Capitol Records. The band's drummer Jacob Marshall explained:

This time last year we were in Time Square celebrating the release of our first (and only) major label record. As all things converged into a single black hole, and EMI was bought up by Terra Firma, we were smashed against a large brick wall and we broke. We lost two long time members. We parted ways with our manager. Ultimately, we parted ways with Capitol. As we rubbed our eyes and looked around, we decided that there was still enough life inside to give this another shot. We picked up the pieces and slowly inched forward.

ow, after the last few months of planing and gearing up for a new season, I am proud to say that we will be making our most meaningful statement yet. We are over half way through with a new batch of songs that are the most musical yet. We have split our time between Drexel University working with amazing student engineers and are returning home to Earthsound with Mark Padgett to finish some tracking and mixing. For those hoping for a return to the sonic pallet of Destination:Beautiful... you will have it.
